A Committed Life

1 Peter 4:19: Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

Proverbs 16:3: Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

Notice that the commitment comes before the correct thoughts. God is faithfully committed to those of us who are His children. By comparison our commitment to Him is small and inconsistent. We haven*t much to commit and are even stingy with that. The amazing thing is that He dotes on our little commitment like a mother dotes on a dandelion brought to her by her toddler.

If we only give God the fringes of our lives we shouldn*t be surprised if He is only involved with those fringes. We will get far better results in our relationship with Him if we give ourselves fully to Him. He deserves far more than a half-hearted commitment.

Matthew 22:37: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Avis B. Christiansen*s song Only One Life can be a wonderful prayer of commitment:

Only one life to offer;
Jesus, my Lord and King
Only one tongue to praise Thee;
And of Thy mercy sing (forever)
Only one heart*s devotion;
Savior oh may it be
Consecrated alone to Thy matchless glory;
Yielded fully to Thee.

Only this hour is mine Lord;
May it be used for Thee
May every passing moment;
Count for eternity (my Savior)
Souls all about are dying;
Dying in sin and shame
Help me bring them the message of Calvary*s redemption;
In Thy glorious name.

Only one life to offer;
Take it dear Lord I pray
Nothing from Thee withholding;
Thy will I now obey (my Jesus)
Thou who has freely given;
Thine all in all for me
Claim this life for Thine own to be used my Saviour;
Every moment for Thee.

The chorus of Esther K. Rusthoi*s song When We See Christ:

It will be worth it all
When we see Jesus,
Life*s trials will seem so small
When we see Christ;
One glimpse of His dear face
All sorrow will erase,
So bravely run the race
Till we see Christ.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon: May the Holy Spirit work in us a cleaving of our whole heart to our Lord Jesus.
